Over the past 2 decades, the family environment in which young children have grown up in Canada has changed dramatically. This document shows how these changes relate to child development and explains how families have adapted their parenting roles. It includes information on parents' age, education level, and employment status, as well as on child care arrangements, family structure, family income, and infant mortality. On each page, findings from current research are used to discuss the implications of the data presented in the chart. In the concluding section, policies to support families with young children are described.
